Lecture Series

Camping, one of Canada's most popular pastimes allows one to experience nature in a unique and personal way. But if done improperly, it can affect the serenity and beauty of the site. Participants will learn the principles behind Low Impact Camping and put their new skills into practice as they select their gear, navigate the trail, select a campsite, and prepare a small meal.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Environmental Ethics
Develop an understanding of how human leisure activities impact wild spaces in Canada
• Distinguish between pristine and high impact wilderness spaces
• Compare different types of leisure travel
• Analyze the environmental impacts of a variety of leisure activities
• Examine ways of lessoning the environmental impacts of wilderness activities

Pre-Trip Preparation
Interpret methods of packing and planning for a successful low-impact wilderness excursion
• Evaluate a variety of gear and understand the advantages of multi-use equipment
• Prepare a wilderness plan that suites the selected wilderness zone
• Develop a menu that will optimize garbage management
• Discuss clothing options and the impact that they may have on the wilderness setting

Campsite Selection
Examine ways to lesson our human footprint while setting up camp
• Understand proper fire construction techniques
• Examine various natural surfaces and the type of shelter best used in that specific location
• Examine ways to deal with both human and camp waste
• Construct an eco-friendly field kitchen and food preparation area
• Discuss ways to show respect for wildlife and avoid unwanted encounters

TERMS AND CONDITIONS DEPOSIT All reservations are based upon a first come first served basis. A 25% deposit is required to secure your reservation; the balance is too paid in full 14 days prior to departure date. If a reservation is to be made within 14 days of the departure date, full payment is required. Upon receipt of your deposit, you will receive trip confirmation and all pre-departure information. CANCELLATION A full refund, less a $100.00 administration fee, will be granted if cancellations are received within 14 days or more prior to departure date. Due to trip preparation fees, such as permits, staff training, and food, there will be no refund for cancellations less than 14 days prior to departure, unless otherwise agreed to, and authorized by The LUNA Project. For your convenience, you may change the date of your trip 14 days prior to departure without penalty. The LUNA Project, reserves the right to reschedule or cancel any trip should undesirable conditions prohibit travel. In the unlikely event of such a cancellation, all participants will be refunded in full. If a participant is late or fails to arrive for a confirmed course, clinic, or, trip, as outlined in the trip confirmation form, no refund or credit will be given. MEDICAL EXPENSES Any expense or cost incurred by use of medical care, or evacuation, is solely the responsibility of the participant (if under 18 years of age, the responsibility of the signed parent/guardian). All participants who are not Canadian citizens should have reimbursement insurance. Should a participant need to be sent home or evacuated during a program, all expenses are to be paid by the participant. All insurance costs are the responsibility of the participant. HEALTH AND LIABILITY All activities offered through The LUNA Project, are physically demanding. Participants should be in good physical health, any health issues or concerns should be fully disclosed on the participants’ medical form. CONFIDENTIALITY All information provided to The LUNA Project, by the participant is for office use only. The LUNA Project does not provide this information in any way to outside agencies.
